Joseph B. Clarke
Born in Connecticut in 1817, J. B. Clarke moved to Vermillion, Ohio with his family at age eight. Living throughout Ohio for most of his life, Clarke did not come to live in Oberlin until the early 1870s, seven years after marrying a member of the 1860 graduating class of Oberlin College. Clarke's activity in Oberlin saw him serving as Justice of the Peace, President of the Citizens National Bank after the death of Montraville Stone, and as a leader in a number of different church positions. In his term as mayor of Oberlin, from 1880-1884, Clarke advocated temperance, like many members of the Oberlin community. J. B. Clarke died February 24, 1891.
