This next building easily fools the
eye; it was actually constructed as two separate buildings in 1871.
The two buildings had an alleyway between them and a bridge that connected
the upper floors. In 1911 H.F. Smith purchased both properties and in
1927 the alleyway was enclosed by extending the building on the north
to the building on the south.

If you look at the entryway you can understand what happened. This central doorway, below the break in the windows above, is the new stairway to the second floor. The enclosed front on the second floor was made into office space and the back into an apartment. Again, many different businesses have been located here. Number 29 the southern part was furniture store with different proprietors for many years, a grocer and Stofans Photography studio, remembered today by many. |
