Dan Styer's Qualifications
Why am I qualified to give advice about the teaching of quantum mechanics?
- I have taught a technical junior-level quantum mechanics course
for physics majors at Oberlin College four times.
Here is my syllabus for the next time
I teach that course.
- I have taught a technical senior-level quantum mechanics course
and seminar
for physics majors at Oberlin College once.
- As an advanced graduate student at Cornell University, I prepared the
solutions for and graded the homework of a graduate-level quantum mechanics
course (using the text by Baym).
- I developed and taught a course on quantum mechanics for a general
audience called
"The
Strange World of Quantum Mechanics".
I have presented this course at Oberlin College nine times.
- I have written a
book
that evolved out of the above course and that
was published by Cambridge University Press.
- I have twice served as associate instructor for the computer conference
course "Demystifying Quantum Mechanics", developed and taught by Edwin
F. Taylor.
- My computer programs "Quantum Mechanical Time Development" and
"Identical Particles in Quantum Mechanics" were winners in the 1994
Computers in Physics
Educational Software Contest
(see Computers in Physics, 8 (1994) 672-678).
These programs are published in J.R. Hiller, I.D. Johnston, and D.F. Styer,
Quantum Mechanics Simulations (Wiley, New York, 1995) [part of the
CUPS project].
- I wrote the article D.F. Styer, "Common misconceptions regarding
quantum mechanics," Am. J. Phys. 64 (1996) 31-34; 1202.
