This one-story commercial structure
with symmetrical façade and central entryway was, until 1997,
two separate storefronts. In 1930, Mr. Rowland demolished a one-story
frame building on this site and built this new modern building. From
1930 to the 1970s the south storefront was the site of Pettiford Bakery,
a well remembered African American business. Mrs. Pettiford first baked
in Hobbs Restaurant on East College; in 1924 Pettifords was located
at 110 South Main, it then moved to this site and operated out of the
frame building for a few years before demolition occurred.

George Bailey built this two-story brick structure in 1928. Interestingly, Mr. Bailey demolished a home to build this commercial structure, then in the 1990s it was returned to residential use. Mr. Baileys daughter, Patricia Stetson, told me that the bricks used in the construction of this building came from the demolition of Spear Laboratory, the last standing structure in Tappan Square. | |
From 1929 to 1946, the building was
G.T. Sedgemans furniture and undertaking business.
